Why are EDC Utility Knives The Newest Trend? (Everyday Carry)
So why have EDC Utility Knives been so popular lately?
It seems that every company is jumping on this bandwagon, and I'm loving it!
I love a good everyday carry utility knife, so I wanted to make this video to discuss what makes these knives so popular!
I don't like putting links to knives in my description box because sometimes UA-cam doesn't like that, so here's my Beacons page if you want to check out some of these blades for yourself.

i used to have some little folding utility knife when i did building maintenance for a hospital but it was more or less a razor blade holder because i was constantly using it to scrape things off of surfaces and i carried a regular knife as well. when i got back into construction i was doing underground utilities and i had just bought six Kershaw 1775 od-1 knives and that was the only knife i used for six years i didn’t carry a second knife i had like a gentleman’s folder with some extra making parts so it was a high maintenance knife that i out through a hard use application for that long and really enjoyed that experience everyone around me carried utility knives and i always felt like i used my knife a lot more than anyone around me. i don’t want to explain everything about prison gangs or really get into that story but i ended up with ptsd pretty bad a a few years and it’s been a couple years since i’ve had an episode i had to quit drinking entirely but anyway i started getting a lot more into knives after that and carrying multiple knives and finding ones that pair well together. i kept taking construction jobs after that too so i’ve revisited the utility blade knives and even though i find them useful here and there i don’t really like them. i like the bit driver on the fast back but i couldn’t stand the rest of it so i gave it away to someone who had lost theirs. i’ve had a cool one for a while i can’t remember what it is but it’s titanium and it slides out and it just sits by the front door in case my wife wants to use it for boxes or something. and then they one i grab out of my tool box when i need it at work is the swedish style “shark knife utility knife” and i really like it. it is a fixed blades version made specifically for roofers and carpet layers with a really large funky looking handle which is very ergonomic and it has a bi directional cheap plastic sheath that also has a pocket clip so its like a pocket fixed blade and it has a dial you unscrew and the handle folds open and you can store another ten blades inside. i like it because i think it is really trashy and sloppy to leave used razor blades around a job site and this way when i’m changing the blades i can stash my old used blades back in the handle with the rest of them until i get back to ground level and it’s fun to use and carry but it’s still not nearly as enjoyable for me as carrying a regular knife so it lives in my tool box and i’ll fetch it if i need it that bad. i am probably going to get the exo because it is the only california legal gravity knife ever and the civivi looks cool but i know i wouldn’t ever use it so i would just give it to someone else. come to think of it ive had my shark knife about eight years now and i do see sometimes a custom made utility fixed blade knife pop up without the weird looking shark handle and the cheap plastic sheath and it is really convincing but all the ones i’ve seen have the civivi problem that there’s a screw holding the blade in place which requires a separate tool to change the blades so i haven’t found the right one just yet but that’s more or less what i’m looking for in a utility knife is maybe a slightly classier version of what is already working for me in a fixed blade version

i would like to add the pressure cult nomad. its tsa friendly when the blade is not in. when it is, its a fixed blade and it comes with the hex wrench to change the blade out. its a good self defense option that makes it through most check points. its become of my favorite edc knives.

2:37 this upsets me and i want to cry about it! i don’t think you’re a knife guy if you pick one set of pros and cons over another set, just carry two knives (or four). utility blades are infinitely destructible so if you work in an environment where you may destroy your nice knife AND you’re a knife guy then carrying a utility knife in addition to your good knife…. “why bother if i already have another cutting tool?” first off, shut it down! if you cut hard to cut plastic with a thin slicing knife like a utility blade the plastic will punch the blade and create surface tension which will stop or slow your cut and when you overcome the extra drag then the blade will cut super fast and uncontrolled like jump or skip through the material. a convex edge distorts the plastic so it your cutting edge stays in contact with the material and it will cut much more fluidly. a thin blade will slice really well and a convex edge will not. the utility knife is a wharncliffe style blade which excels at drag cuts and focuses all of the cutting power right to the tip but it doesn’t drill into hard materials well because the tip is too fine and a something like a spear point will penetrate materials a lot better. the utility blade is going to break about every day which is totally fine but what if you’re cutting something and you don’t want the blade to break? there are tons of other advantages to carrying two knives and i could list a lot of them but you get it. whatever reason you carry one knife for is a good enough reason to carry two. utility knives have a place but that doesn’t mean it needs to take the place of another knife.

I would probably go with the pichi because I really like the size. I like the looks of the civivi, but don't like that you need a screwdriver to change the blade. I'll also say to check out the review by gideon's tactical on the civivi utility knife. He was having issues with the screw backing out after a while and the blade falling off. Thanks for a good review of some different options!

Honestly I can see where Vice Hardware is going with this and I think that the wallet itself looks cool, but my main concern is the bands that keep the wallet together, over a period of time they will eventually wear out, and the wallet becomes loose and you cards will fall out of it. I would still prefer the groove wallet over this.

Since you asked... I would probably prefer the Civivi version. It is just traditional, simple, and a solid locked blade would give me piece of mind. I don't like the blade wobble of the fast changing versions. Also, not like I would be carrying extra blades with me. So as I get a new blade from my garage toolbox, I could easily remove the screw for a blade swap. However if I had to use a blade knife for work and need a quick change version, then I would probably go for a DeWalt or Milwaukee (preferred) version. Having a beefier version seems to be less stress on the hand.

Another great point for these knives is the ability to remove the blade completely.... I used to fly a lot for work, I have forfeited so many great knives when I forgot they were in my pocket. With these, I could simply discard the blade. Same if you were entering a sports venue and forgot to remove your knife.

I've owned the majority of the knives shown here, down to my last favourites Exo, Civivi, Exceeds, and have the Pichi on the way. I absolutely love all of them, Civivi might have to be my favourite, just because of multiple deployments, and that the blade is fixed with a screw. Finally, a utility that is well made and the blade doesn't come out when getting stuck in materials. Can't wait to see how th Pichi is in hand.

I carry a pocket knife because I love using pocket knives. Because of that, and the need for a prybar, the Gerber Prybrid has remained my main utility knife. It's a very robust prying tool and the utlity blade is just a bonus for me. I use the Dewalt Carbide blades and they last forever. I've used it at work for cutting countless boxes and zip ties the last month or so and it's still nearly as sharp as when I installed it. A lot of people who love knives also love knife maintenance, so I don't mind having to hone or strop weekly, so for everything else I use my knife.

You said that they are good for people who hard-use their knives. I think the opposite is true. Most EDC content comes from people that don't use their gear, which is apparent from how "new" the gear looks. After they sold us on how much 200$ EDC pocket knives are important for all of us, although all their knife needs could easily be fulfilled with a cheap box cutter, these utility knives bridge the gap. They are trendy because some of us don't need to carry a knife at all but want to have one, for some reason.
